Sequentially had the privilege of working with some of the UK’s most sought after children’s illustrators, at our media training workshop in Bloomsbury.
While illustrators might feel more at home quietly creating their artwork, they're under ever increasing pressure to appear on podcasts, take part in Zoom discussions and speak at book launches.
Most of our participants felt that giving an interview was something to be endured rather than an opportunity to promote their work.
We explored how they could take better advantage of these opportunities and answer questions in a way that brought the conversation back to what they wanted to say, empowering them to steer the dialogue.
But as words only make up 7% of what we communicate, we also investigated the power of body language. We led the participants through a set of body, breath and voice exercises to calm pre-interview nerves and to increase focus and confidence.
Then it was lights, camera, action! We interviewed each of our illustrators, asking them questions on camera about topics ranging from diversity to the environment. And they aced it! The participants watched each other in the hot seat, making it a great opportunity for individual and group learning.
By the end of the workshop, these illustrators emerged with newfound confidence and awareness, armed with the skills to share their stories with the world.
“I really enjoyed it and felt like I learnt so much. It was especially useful to see everyone else also do their interviews and get a sense of different ways of approaching questions. It was all so thoughtfully structured and felt every second of it was useful.”
“I actually had a 25 minute interview on Zoom with US librarians the evening after our training. As soon as I got home I emailed them to ask them more about the format, as you advised. I thought the course as you have it is perfect. It was exactly what I needed to improve.”
“Thank you so much Helen and Claire. You were so helpful, you kept the workshop moving along at a good pace, didn’t let me waffle and gave great tips to be confident in different areas of media presentation.”
"Thank you Claire and Helen,
it was well worth being part of this mind opening workshop! Great to step back and think how to present yourself in an interview.
It was especially useful watching others being interviewed to see how they responded."
