Helen Percival shares her insights as an actor and journalist, encouraging us to bring our physical bodies to an interview or public speaking engagement.
Bodies. We all have them and yet most of us race through each day, barely giving them a second thought. We live in a world where importance is given to the mind and the body is simply viewed as a vehicle to transport this mind from A to B.
But navigating life in this way means the way we move through the world will always be compromised. Our bodies are continuously communicating with us, we just have to practice the art of listening. Because our bodies hold knowledge that is just as powerful - if not more so - than that of the mind.
So what does this have to do with communication and media training? Rightly so, much of the focus of communication training focuses on crafting a succinct, captivating message. But if your body is not also fully engaged in the process of communication, your delivery will always be compromised. Think of actors; a huge proportion of their preparation is grounded in training the body, breath and voice - these are their instruments and they must be kept in tip top shape. And whilst you might not consider yourself an actor, if you speak in public in any sort of capacity you are giving a performance of sorts, and so engaging your body is just as important for you as it is for actors.
That’s why we at Sequentially take a holistic approach to training, meaning we put as much emphasis on delivering exercises which engage the body, breath and voice as we do on helping clients craft their message. After all, when you consider that 55% of what we communicate is non-verbal*, it’s worth paying attention to what you’re broadcasting before you’ve even opened your mouth!
Furthermore, these body, breath and voice exercises help you to feel good! In our most recent workshop, all the participants said they felt much more energised and positive after just a handful of exercises.
So as we ease into 2024, perhaps take time this year to practice tuning into your body, you might be surprised to hear what it has to say! And if you’d like to experience these exercises first hand for yourself, drop us a line. This is media training, holistically.
